Restore your wooden floors in Belgravia

The popular 1970s TV series ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ was set in Belgravia.  The flurry of all those servants’ feet on the floors would no doubt have created much wear and tear.

When the marks got too much, the redoubtable Mr Bellamy would have been prompted to search out the specialists.
Not a very promising plot line, admittedly, although, one hundred years on, your own floors merit an easy first call to..

Great Floor Sanding & Finishing in Floor Sanding Belgravia

Belgrave Square 1860.  Home to three dukes, thirteen peers, a few baronets and thirteen MP’s.

What a contrast to fifty years before, when this swampy area on clay was a notorious haunt of footpads and highwaymen.
Its fortunes changed after an 1826 Act of Parliament allowed it to be drained.  The clay was turned into bricks and the building of stately homes on gravel foundations commenced.

This final flowering of late Georgian was a joint venture between the Earl of Grosvenor and the property speculator, Thomas Cubitt.  The squares and streets reflect the other family names of the Earl: the Duke of Westminster and Earl of Belgrave.

Over the following years, many famous people have lived in Belgravia: the poets Matthew Arnold and Alfred, Lord Tennyson; the constitutional writer, Walter Bagehot.

More infamous was the absconding Lord Lucan who - with good reason - hasn’t deigned to revisit his old haunts since the events of a certain night in 1974.

The different types of hardwood floors

If you're thinking of fitting wooden floors in your property, or maybe you want to repair or restore your wood floor, you really can't go wrong. There are several types of hardwood floors, each giving you the perfect match for any decor in your home. From modern to country-style and traditional, hardwood flooring really does go with any room.

Experts in Floor Sanding & Finishing in Floor Sanding BelgraviaUnfinished or Finished?

There are a few key questions to ask yourself about what kind of hardwood floor may be best suited for your needs, the first one is whether you want the wood to be pre-finished or if you'll apply the finish yourself.

Unfinished wood is usually the best option if you'd like to apply a custom stain to the floor once it's been laid, or if you're relaying part of the floor and want to match the colour of the existing hardwood floor. After unfinished hardwood flooring has been laid and stained, several coats of a protective finish are applied before it's ready to be walked on. It's the perfect option for kitchens as sanding and sealing the floorboards will act as a sealant for the spaces between the boards, helping to reduce water seepage.

The pre-finished hardwood flooring comes pre-sanded and pre-sealed so you simply need to install and it's ready to walk on straight away.

Experienced team in Floor Sanding & Finishing in Floor Sanding BelgraviaSolid or Engineered?

Solid hardwood flooring is 100% wood and is usually between 5/8inches to 3/4inches in thickness. As it is made of 100% solid wood, you can sand and refinish a solid floor several times without compromising the integrity. However, solid wood flooring can be susceptible to humidity changes and is therefore not recommended for use in below-grade basements.

An engineered hardwood floor is simply a veneer of real wood which is glued to the layers of wood, such as plywood, underneath. Engineered wood has great stability and is suitable for any area of your home. However, you may only be able to sand and finish engineered flooring once or twice, depending on the veneer's thickness.

Which species should I use?

The final question to ask is which species of wood is best used for your hardwood floor. The best floors are made with very hardwoods, such as maple, oak and cherry. Ash and mahogany are also common species to use and are very resilient.

No matter what species you choose, whether you buy solid, engineered, finished or unfinished, hardwood floors are a good investment. You can sand out scratches and even refinish the whole floor to make it look as good as new and most hardwood floors will last for decades if properly cared for.
